It involves a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another person's misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to help them. An example of compassion can be seen in the story of Tang Dynasty poet and statesman, Fan Zhongyan. When his son died from a fever, Fan was grief-stricken but still found the strength to comfort his wife and console her with words of wisdom. He said: "People come into this world empty-handed, and they leave it just as they came - nothing more than dust. Why should we grieve over something that is so natural?" His words showed great compassion towards his wife in her time of sorrow.
