Introduction: In recent years, social media has become an increasingly important part of adolescent life and development. It has been estimated that over 95% of teens have access to a smartphone or computer with internet access (Pew Research Center 2018). This access allows them to engage in various activities such as online gaming, connecting with friends through messaging apps or sharing photos on Instagram (Rosen et al., 2019). While there are many positive aspects to using social media, such as connecting with peers and expressing creativity (Steinberg et al., 2019), there is growing concern about its potential negative effects on adolescents’ mental health. This paper will review existing literature examining the impact of social media use on teenagers’ psychological wellbeing. Additionally, it will discuss implications for mental health professionals when working with adolescents who are engaging in heavy usage of these platforms. Finally, it will suggest directions for future research into this topic.
